[Potter 201][Morris & Levin 92]. From the moment of its publication, Elihu Vedder's Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám achieved unparalleled success. The limited elephant folio (17" x 14.75") edition, printed on Japanese vellum with tipped-in "remarque" plates, appeared in Boston on 8 November 1884; six days later, it was sold out. Critics rushed to acclaim it as a masterwork of American art, and Vedder (1836 - 1923) as the master American artist. [Smithsonian Museum of American Art]. After the first edition elephant folio edition sold out, Houghton Mifflin published this folio edition, with the illustrations printed on the page, rather than tipped-in, as in the elephant folio edition. Expertly rebacked with original boards and spine laid on, hinges strong, front board mildly rubbed with small losses, and corners lightly worn, interior quite clean with no markings, a very few incidents of light foxing only, else fine. A handsome volume. It is unusual to find the text block in this excellent condition. VERY GOOD/NONE (as issued).. Photo-lithographed Plates. Folio - 13" x 16". 127 pp. Very Good with No dust jacket as issued .
